Presidential elections were held for the first time in Bulgaria on 12 January 1992, with a second round on 19 January.〔Nohlen, D & Stöver, P (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p369 ISBN 978-3-8329-5609-7〕 The result was a victory for Zhelyu Zhelev of the Union of Democratic Forces, who won 52.8% of the vote in the second round. Voter turnout was 75.4% in the first round and 75.9% in the second.〔Nohlen & Stöver, p388〕
